Are dropping point and operating temperature the same thing?
No. Dropping point is a physical test value where the grease starts to drip; operating temperature is the recommended long-term working range based on oxidation stability, base-oil evaporation and thickener structure, and is usually far below the dropping point. Always select by operating temperature, not dropping point alone.
What base oil is needed above 200°C?
Above 200°C you generally need high-temperature synthetic base oils such as perfluoropolyether (PFPE) or phenyl silicone, combined with a PTFE or similar high-temperature thickener. Mineral oil oxidizes and cokes quickly at these temperatures. Also consider continuous vs. intermittent temperature, moisture and chemical exposure.
